Answer to Egypt Quiz #7
Muhammad Ali (left) has been referred to as the “Founder of Modern Egypt.” An Albanian officer in the Ottoman army, he was sent to re-occupy Egypt after Napoleon’s withdrawal in 1801, and he rose to become pasha (governor) and viceroy of the country. After smashing the Mamluks who had ruled Egypt for six hundred years, he instituted military, economic and education reforms. His descendents remained in power until Egypt’s Revolution of 1952.
Muhammad Ali (right) is widely considered the greatest heavyweight boxing champion of all time. A Muslim, he was named Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Century in 1999.
