The image is the Vincent Van Gogh painting “Poppy Flowers” which was stolen from the Mahmoud Khalil Museum in Cairo on August 21. With an appraised value of $50 million, this marks the second time that the painting was stolen from the Mahmoud Khalil. The first was 1978 – it was recovered in Kuwait two years later.
It is believed to be an inside job. Only 7 of 43 security cameras were working at the time. Egypt’s Deputy Minister of Culture, Mohsen Shaalan, who oversees the country’s museum security, has been charged with negligence and professional delinquency.
